Governing where Archive Utility unzips to.

How can I specify where AU puts newly unzipped files please?

If you go to /System/Library/CoreServices and launch Archive Utility, you can then pull up its preferences which give some flexibility. If you want to be asked each time, The Unarchiver is worth a look.

I tried that by double-clicking a zipped file and then Command-Comma, but just got the system sound that means "no go".

Is there a way to make The Unarchiver the default, or am I stuck with using Open With?

I believe you'll need to launch Archive Utility independent of a zip file in order to access its preferences.

Simply select a zip file, use File > Get Info, then find the Open With section. Use the pop-up menu to select The Unarchiver, then click the Change All button.

Thank you Sir!

All done.

Just a shame now that Path Finder doesn't scroll through a list of folders when dragging the resultant .pdf to it's intended home.

Just my opinion - I like the idea of manually deciding exactly which utility opens a compressed file - with a right-click/Open with.
If you ONLY have .zip or a couple of other types, then setting The Unarchiver as default will likely work for you. I seem to have about twenty different file types that I get from time to time, so I like the control that "open with" provides.

I really only get .PDFs and the odd .jpeg and .tiff, so yes, it works for me, but I can see your point of view.

You should open Archive Utility in CoreServices, then select its Preferences, to make changes to default behavior. Double-clicking a zip file and then pressing Cmd-comma isn't always going to work to call up AU's prefs because AU self-terminates after unzipping a file. However, if the zip file is large enough, your processor is slow enough, and your fingers are fast enough, it's possible to use Cmd-comma to activate AU's prefs window before AU terminates. (Tested under 10.6.8.)

The Unarchiver does it and keeps it simple for me, so I'll stick with that. ;-)
