Time Machine: Backing up 1Gb, 225Mb, or 16Mb?

I am very confused about what TM is doing at the moment. When I click on the TM menulet, it says "Copying 1.41Gb".
Arrrrgh!!!

When I look at the the logs, there are several different contenders for the size of the backup:

The size of the free space on the disk leads me to believe that it hasn't copied over 1gb of stuff. But what in the name of actual Fluffy Bunny is going on....?

It could be secretly deleting all of your files, or this could be a clue...

Code:
Backup completed successfully.

I know the backup is successful, but the messages are confusing.
