Clean install of Leopard-Software Update seems to be missing bunch of stuff
So, I just did a clean install of Leopard on a PowerBook G4 (Titanium) from a 10.5 retail disc.
Software Update has installed a handful of updates and now reports that we are up to date. However, we didn't get anything for iTunes (still at 7.4.2) and it doesn't look like we got the Quicktime 7.7 update, for example. This makes me wonder what else is missing. Is Software Update not fully supported for these old systems anymore? Am I going to have to comb through the Apple Downloads site and try to figure out what is missing?? |

Yes, a clean install of Leopard (I just did that a couple of days ago) does not provide a handful of the last updates for Leopard through Software Update.
As far as I know, you would need to get the installs for these app: Safari 5.0.6 QuickTime 7.7 iTunes 10.6.3 All are available with a simple search through the Apple support downloads page. Here's good links for each one: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1422 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1575 http://support.apple.com/kb/DL761 Assuming you have run software update, and it tells you that your system is up to date, then those should be the only additional ones you may need that you could consider as parts of the basic OS X system. Why are those few ignored by Software Update? I don't know for sure, but would likely be related to the fact that Apple is no longer supporting Leopard, or PPC Macs. All of those updates are newer than the last combined updater, so it's possible that Apple did not link properly to software update for those last few updates (Again, I don't really know that, it's just a guess) |

Wow! Thanks for confirming this DeltaMac.
This is rather disappointing that Apple can't even be bothered to provide a full Software Update for Leopard. (Actually, I am quite pissed about this.) I am definitely missing Quicktime 7.7 and the latest iTunes. However, Safari 5.0.6 did come through Software Update... It is at all feasible can we compare our list of Software Updates, DeltaMac? These were provided by Software Update: MacOS X Update Combined, 10.5.8 Security Update 2011-004 Java for MacOS X 10.5 Update 5 Airport Utility, 5.6.1 Remote Desktop Client Update, 3.4 Migration Assistant Update for MacOS X Leopard iLife Support, 9.0.4 Safari, 5.0.6 Java for MacOS X 10.5 Update 10 |

Well, in my view, Leopard does update through Software Update, and your system will work just fine, even without up-to-date iTunes or QuickTime.
You missed a couple (although I'm sure you did get them) Front Row 2.1.7 RAW camera updates. Neither are likely relevant to what you would likely do with a Titanium G4. BTW, I still have one of those also, and just recently snapped one of those (fragile) hinges ![]() Anyway, I think the Leopard update thing is a fairly recent change, and likely something to do with some minor change to the 10.5.8 combined updater. I have installed Leopard many times (probably more than 100), and sometime this year (maybe longer), something is not the same in the Leopard install. Here's what I see: I used to install Leopard, then run the combined updater, plus all the other Leopard updates that I have. Then, remove the user, so it would then boot as a completely updated OS X system, but ready to setup a new user. In the past, I would then migrate the user from a backup drive. It now errors out of that, and I found that the only way to migrate from a backup was to do that migration FIRST, after the initial Leopard install, and only then could the updates run. I suspect that whatever changed, also somehow prevents those couple of updates from being presented through Software Update. Nothing to get upset about, as I have all those update installers downloaded anyway. The other part of this, iTunes and Quicktime need to BOTH be there - you don't want to update just one - the recent iTunes needs the recent Quicktime. Of course, the OS X system is just fine with what it supplies through Software Update. You just have to know which you need to find. Or, keep the updates, like I do, so you have what you need... |

Hinges on my machine are rather stiff, not sure if that is normal or not. This machine actually died and came back from the dead. In March of 2010 (after almost 7 years of continuous use) the screen (and external display) would only show scrambled/psychedelic imagery. I spent several days zapping pram and resetting the PMU a well as any other tricks I could find online. Also took it to the Apple Store where they did the same and pronounced the video chip as fried. The underlying system did still work though and it could be used in Firewire Target disk mode. I replaced it with a new Mini. A few weeks later I powered it on to prepare to wipe the drive and it booted-up normally! It has been sitting on my desk untouched for the past 2.5 years, so I decided I should either get rid of it or try to start using it again. The thing is, I am scared to actually do much with it due to lack of security updates... |

Use a few drops of some silicone-based oil to help free up the hinges.
Think of security this way: Now that older Macs, and an older versions of OS X get less use, there will also be less threat from malware developers. You can call it "security through obscurity". Vulnerabilities in Java (the most mentioned recent activity) don't exist in previous Java versions, for example. Just my opinion, but normal security precautions (strong password, don't enable the root user, use a standard user rather than an admin account, etc) should be just fine on an older Mac. |
