Java Update 10.6 Update 12 says that this affects those who have not installed MacOS X 10.6 update 9. What is MacOS X 10.6 update 9????

You missed a few words, which will make all the difference in understanding that the update mentioned is a Java update...
![]() Here's the relevant quote from the Java Update 12 page http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573 :

In other words, it's "(Java for Mac OS X 10.6) update 9" not "Java (for Mac OS X 10.6 update 9)"

Hmm, your reading makes sense, but ultimately, the wording makes no sense to me. If I have NOT installed update 9, it will disable Java, but if I have installed update 9 it will not disable Java? If so, how do I install update 9 so that update 12 will not disable Java? Weird.

See this page for the description of Java update 9:
http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/...plet_execution So the answer to your question is that update 9 disables Java and so does update 12. I.e. the update 12 description should have said something along the lines of: "if Java-in-the-browser is not already disabled, this update will do so."

Ok, that makes sense to me. Thank-you both for your patience.
