Clone Boot Drive with rsync
Hi all
I try to clone the boot drive Mountain Lion 10.8.2 with the following instructions: sudo rsync -rlEtuv --delete /Volumes/HD1 /Volumes/HD1B sudo bless -folder /Volumes/HD1B/System/Library/CoreServices sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -root /Volumes/HD1B All runs without error but the system HD1B hangs at startup (shortly before the login picture the "waiting wheel" is spinning endlessly). What's wrong? Any tip or hint is welcome. Regards Lazy |

I would use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Both come in Free and Paid versions.
Both work really well. |

Both work better than "really well". I've never had a problem of any sort with either of them and I've used both on different machines and systems for years.

OK OK.. There really wonderful and amazing
I currently favor CCC though I have paid for both. The free versions do all requested in the OPs original request... Bootable Clones...I must say that if you go back far enough in time any product has had moments where it was out of sync with Mac OS and had issues. It is really stretching my memory but I believe this occurred around 2004 when Tiger came out. CCC no longer worked with out tinkering and I switched to SuperDuper for a long time. Shirt pocket who makes super has amazing support. CCC came back on strong a while later. Super had a moment or two between different OS versions where an update was required for proper function too. The length of these compatibility gaps were shorter then CCCs. When I have worked with flaky or dying drives I have had better luck with with CCC. Super sometimes creates duplicate files on the source when the destination goes off line or vs. versa and you have to clean these up or have lost space on a volume. Perhaps this has been addressed. It is also quite possible that CCC suffered from this at some point. Note that flaky drive behavior can be engendered with healthy drives with a firewire chipset/case that is not oxford. Both Super and CCC (there are others) are considered about the best there are at cloning and scheduling bootable backups among other tasks. Both are much better and easier then simply using rsync. Yes, when CCC lagged a bit behind OS X for a while (shortly after Mike Bombich went to work for Apple) I switched to the paid version of SuperDuper! as well. I've got CCC and even donated back in pre-OS X days before it became shareware and I keep it up to date as a backup for SD!, but don't use it much now. I can say that when I've tested it, it always worked well and efficiently.

He went to work at Apple about the same time as Apple introduced OS X 10.2. For OS 9 and before, he had embedded a perl module called psync for cloning and then switched when OS X rsync was more solid. rsync is much faster than psync was

TY I remember having to add that
He stopped development for a bit too. I found an interesting interview he did a about 6 months ago CCC and himself... Anyway we have hijacked the thread now (sic). Any way question answered. CCC or Super will do the job for free
