Downloading updates Mountain Lion
In the past I have always downloaded system updates & stored them for future need. Being in India, with limited download speeds etc - this was helpful, not having to download them again.
With Mountain Lion one now has to download through the App store which, it appears, does not give an option to download only. To get around this I have been downloading through http://support.apple.com/downloads/. Whereas in the past Apple posted all downloads on this site ( almost immediately ) they appear now to be not doing so. As an example neither Safari 6.0.2 nor the latest Java updates have appeared there. Does anyone please know whether there is a way around this ? A terminal command maybe that will allow one just to download a file without automatic installation in Mountain Lion ? |

I have a package called Safari6.02Mountain.pkg in a subfolder of /Library/Updates. Even though I haven't updated it yet.

It appears that one needs to check the box in system prefs/software update - " Download newly available updates in the background" . One will then be notified that the update is ready for install. In that case, yes, the package is stored in Library/Updates.
The box was not checked in my system prefs & therefore on clicking update in the App Store - it downloads & updates in one go. I just did that with the Java update & noticed that while downloading - the package is downloaded to Library/Updates but disappears as soon as its automatically installed. Thanks for that benwiggy. In future, having checked that box, i can copy the update package before i install it. |
