Google Apps Lab Integration

I'm in a lab environment where we're looking at getting rid of Open Directory completely and use Google Drive for our storage. Because of this, I'm looking for a nice, clean way to integrate Google Apps into OS X for a multi-user environment.

The best way I can describe what my vision is for this project would be to make the OS X desktop similar to what Google did with widgets for the Android desktop. I would like to customize the desktop screen with these Android-like widgets to view things like Mail and Drive documents. The obvious difference would be that there's a sign-out button somewhere within this user interface.

Has anyone out there had any experience, or done anything like this that could offer some input?
