DVD issue

Hi All - I had an old VHS tape of my wedding converted to DVD. When I insert the DVD into my computer, DVDPlayer opens and plays the movie but does not give me control over fast-forward, pause, etc. I can not figure out how to open the movie in Itunes or QuickTime.

Also, when I open the DVD in finder there are two folders, VIDEO_RM and VIDEO_TS. The former folder contains VIDEO_RM.BUP, .DAT and .IFO. The latter folder was VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB, VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, VTS_01_3.VOB, VTS_01_4.VOB, and VTS_01_5.VOB. I tried copying all these files (by dragging the two folders inside the DVD to a new disk image) and I get an error that says "Finder could not complete the error because some of the data could not be read or written." I'd really like to make copies of this DVD for family. Any ideas?

Thanks all.

You cannot copy DVD files directly - the system is deliberately designed to prevent it. The locked-out controls were probably set by whoever made the DVD for you.

Get a DVD ripper to convert the DVD to a playable format like .m4v. The low quality you will see is a result of the original VHS tape, not from the conversion process.

If you just want to make more DVDs to hand around, you can usually do that with a disc copy program like Toast, or maybe even Disc Utility. It usually doesn't work because of copyright controls, but it's unlikely your disc has any.

If your disk doesn't have copy protection, you may be able to copy it with disk utility. Click on the mounted disk icon in Disk Utility, and then select File -> New -> Disk image from DVD. For the image type (at the bottom of the Save Dialog you'll see next), select DVD/CD Master.

Once you've created this DVD/CD Master, you can burn it to a new blank CD/DVD using Disk Utility.

Try copying just the Video_TS file to a new disk image. It could be that its the VIDEO_RM folder which is causing the error problem.

Thanks all for the help! It seems Disk Utility can copy the DVD by the instructions Cpragman posted. I may generate an MP4 at some point via acme's directions. Thanks again.
