Time Machine will not back up
Hi there,
My time machine won't back up my server anymore. It prepares and runs it's little barber pole for a few minutes, then stops and says "Time Machine Error. Problem may be temporary." I've tried running Disk Utility, both verify and repair disk, and both report no problems with my external hard drive (a drobo, if that helps any). I first noticed the issue after one of the server hard drives failed. It has since been replaced, etc etc. Not sure if Time Machine would be affected. I've tried turning off and on TM in an effort to "reset" where it backs up to, but no avail. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated! |

Any messages from Time Machine in either system.log or console.log?

The system.log just says TimeMachinePostBackupHook called and done. As for Console Messages it's not saying anything specific about Time Machine.
Just a heads up, I'm new to all this IT stuff but I'm a fast learner. |

Do you see an icon for the external hard disc?If you click on the icon, can the Mac see the disc?

Most of the comments I've seen about Drobo relate to reliability issues. So it might be worth checking that all is as it should be. Does Drobo provide any software that comes with the hardware? If the drive was replaced, then TM might need "re-pointing" at the new drive. I've recently moved my TM backup from one drive to another, following these steps: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5096 |

@onlinegenie: The server recognizes that there is the drobo exists.
@benwiggy: I'll look into whether or not TM needs repointing. I've tried turning TM off and on, and resetting it up with the Drobo but to no avail. Currently the working theory is that there is residual memory messing with the server. In addition to the back up issues, our mailman system stopped working through the server after the HD was replaced. I'll try benwiggy's suggestion first, but I might end up having to re-set up the server from scratch and bring over the back up from the drobo manually. Will keep you posted. |

Update: After resetting the Server and upgrading from 10.6 to 10.8 Mountain Lion, TM is now working!

TM not
Just a suggestion. Use Carbon Copy Cloner for image based back ups (or Super Duper).
For revision based back ups I prefer Crash plan. I use their cloud based storage (unlimited) for around $50 a year for 1 computer and any mapped drives or $115 a year for up to 10. The software is free if you want to back up to a non cloud destination. TM is well less then Ideal. It rolls over back ups. If you do wireless back ups the sparse bundles get corrupt to easily. Also note that MP has some Time Machine like Capability built in with versioning. |
