Safari slow and bloated. Why?

It has gone from bad to worse in a year maybe. Browsing pages is slow, scrolling responds with half second delay. When I look in Activity Monitor Safari takes 120-150%CPU even if I do not touch anything on Facebook. Youtube videos do not play or are jittery, sometimes Tube page does not load properly.
I tried Camino that is slightly better, but rather similar.
Now Opera works really well. CPU is 4-5% idle and 35% max on the same facebook page that raves safary to 150%.
I could happily start using Opera from now on, but I wonder if there is something odd with my system to bloat Safari so bad.

Have you tried logging into the Guest a/c & trying Safari in that. ( If you want admin access you will have to set up a new separate a/c )

To setup the guest a/c ( if not already done ) - go to System prefs / Accounts. Click the padlock, enter password, click on Guest a/c and enable. Then log out from your a/c & login to Guest a/c.

That will at least will tell you if the problem is in your home user files.

I do clean with Onyx when I get really frustrated. It does not help.

I had a problem with Safari, and manually deleting ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari improved matters.
Deleting the caches with Onyx or with Safari's Developer menu didn't work.

What Safari plugins are installed? Safari > Help > Installed Plug-ins

I think you should try clearing all of your cookies, history, cache, etc. and then restart. See if that works.

You might want to investigate two things from that list: the ESTEID Firefox plug-in, and the Wacom Tablet Plug-In. Are they up-to-date? Have problems been reported by others? What happens if, as a test, you try uninstalling them--does that fix the issues you are seeing?

Also, you should update the Flip4Mac plugin--version 2.4.4.2 is available and runs well on OS X 10.6.8.

Thanks, Trevor.
I went through the plugins. Deleted Wacom, that I do not have installed any longer, updated Flip4Mac and ID card software.
It seems to be a bit better.

How do you copy that extensions log? I am having the same problems with Safari. The Beach Ball of death is everytime now. I will try deleting cache from ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari now.

Thanks to the suggestions here Safari is better overall. Right now with this page open only the CPU is 1-2%.

I have watched what sites would cause the worst performance. Facebook timeline is the one that raves Safari web content(activity monitor) over 100% immediately. It is somewhat understandable with all the crap people try to show me. But it goes very bad fast, so when I type something the characters will appear in 1/2 to 1 sec delay. Not to talk about scrolling.

I did careful examination of processes when browsing Facebook. Little Snitch monitor shows me that twitter.adlesse.com is sending/receiving packages every second, maybe more. So after searching for this domain I found it belongs to Cleaner Youtube extension and is a statistics collector. After uninstalling clen.r videos Youtube extension my Facebook does not hang any more.
So go through you Safari extensions as well. Some may be a nasty little buggers under the innocent name.
