unable to use installed applications

Hi Everyone

I have been using OS X 10.8.2
and
i have got a problem with an installation of any applications.

If I install any application, it appears in the /Volumes/name_of_applications.
after reboot of the operating system it vanished from the drive completely.

is anyone stumbled upon the same problem?
what's the solution for it?

It sounds like you're not actually installing them, just opening up the .dmg file. If you install from non-App Store sources, you need to open the .dmg file and follow the directions to install it. One common method, for example, is dragging the file from your mounted .dmg image into your /Applications folder.

If you use the App Store, this is handled for you.

Hi Trevor

thanks for reply

if i click at the dmg file i see a window with no icon of Applications folder there.

it seems something was broken.
it was possible to install any application without any problem, but then i bumped into the current state....

Here's a guide to how to install apps in OS X:
Installing Applications in Mac OS X

No, you won't necessarily see an Applications folder (although sometimes you'll see a link to your Applications folder on your hard drive, that's certainly not always the case). Not seeing a link to your Applications folder does NOT mean that something is broken.

Mount DMG file, copy the Application to /Applications or it it has a installer double click and install.

as I wrote earlier, if i click it then it is installed into /Volumes and can't be seen and utilised after reboot

it is worth noting, that i have the same problem with xcode too.
i need it to use macports.

if i try to install xcode it starts and appears in the /Volumes folder.
after reboot it vanishes its traces from the drive.

When you open the .dmg - it mounts on your desktop, and should open a window which shows the app, or a .pkg file which could be an installer.
It is NOT installed at that point, but just mounted. That's why it shows up in the /Volumes folder. It's a mounted volume, at that time. _It is NOT installed_
And, that is really just a virtual, or temporary location. When you logout of your user, or restart - that folder will unmount, and will disappear, until you open the .dmg again. That's what should happen to a mounted disk image file.
So, your next step, after opening that .dmg, is to drag the app OUT of that window. There's often a read-me file of some kind, that will probably tell you exactly how to proceed, BUT, usually you will be fine if you drag that app or file out of that window, which will result in copying that file to your chosen location. One suggestion, until you get more experience with this, is to create a new folder on your desktop, just for this purpose. Drag that app from the opened .dmg to your special folder that you just created. The application then WON'T disappear after a restart.
Xcode has a user guide, I think, which should quickly give you the suggested method to install, which you have so far missed doing.

If you need to re-mount the disk image, the .dmg file is most likely in your Downloads folder. Double-clicking it will remount it, and then the instructions provided by DeltaMac, Trevor, or the page Trevor linked can be followed.

I would also look into Homebrew if you are looking to pimp up your system/development environment.
