Migrate Time Machine from clear to encrypted

I'm interested in switching my Time Machine backups from clear to encrypted. I know how to do this, but before I get started I had a question that I can't seem to find an answer to:

Is the existing backup set encrypted or is a new one created?

If the behaviour is different for local and network Time Machine, details on that would be helpful, as both apply to this case.

Thanks in advance.

Your existing backup will be encrypted. In 10.7, network backups could not be encrypted, but that's changed in 10.8.

Thanks. Encryption of the first one is underway.
