Where is the sleep switch on a Macbook?

I have a Macbooks about 5 years old and I need to find the sleep switch. On Ebay people sell the battery contacts which should also be a sleep witch. I looked at it carefully but I don't see how should be the sleep switch. I would very much appreciate if someone can tell me exactly where the sleep switch is so I can take it out because it's broken and I want to use the Macbook only with an external monitor since the built in monitor is cracked. Thank you much.

The older MacBooks have a sleep switch on the battery connector, where it plugs into the logic board. It's not a mechanical switch, but is magnetically activated. You can test it by placing a magnet to the left of the "fn" key (bottom left key). That, assuming the sleep switch is working, will put your MacBook to sleep immediately. If that works, the sleep switch is OK. If your MacBook does not not sleep when you close the lid, then it's likely that the magnet in the lid is out of position.
