Adding multiple artwork files to several items on iTunes 11

Hi all.
in previous versions of itunes one could add artwork in several ways one of which allowed for easily adding several artwork files to more than one item at once without replacing the existing artwork.
I am talking about the little square that was on the left bottom corner of the screen and you could chose if you want to watch the artwork for the currently playing song or the selected song. you could paste into it or simply drag onto it. it would add the art work in appose to replace the existing one as happens when you do it from the info window.
this little square disappeared from version 11 and now I am unable to add several files to several items at once.
anyone solved this pickle?

As I wrote above the method you are describing results in overwriting the existing artwork.
Also I discovered that it accepts only one artwork file at a time (be it by dragging & Dropping or by double clicking on the square and selecting a file with the finder window or even copying the files from finder and pasting them into that square).

Yes, sorry, I deleted my post when it became clear I couldn't read.

I didn't know iTunes could handle multiple artworks. How did it display them? Could you switch between them? How does it deal with existing multiples now?

I think the new iTunes just doesn't handle it!
here are two screen shots to illustrate
the first is of the info window of one song with two artworks the second is of the ituens window while this song is playing and also I have a dogcart plugin that show the artwork of the playing song in the doc icon. you can see that in the itunes window there is one artwork and in the doc the second one.
