Samsung ML-1860 drum cleaning?

Just got this great little printer, but each printed page is coming out with horizontal lines about 2 inches part.

Does the drum need a clean?

If yes, how to do it best?

TIA!

Yeah, probably either the drum or the fuser. Do you see a horizontal line on the drum if you look at it? Or is it clean?

I'll take a look Trevor, thanks. Maybe it had been sitting in storage too long?

I just can't remember if you are/are not supposed to touch the drum and if I wipe it, what with?

It probably is time to replace the printer. New Lasers can be had for around $100 + or -.
Even some with Multi function capability.

The parts you will likely need to replace will cost more then buying a new printer.

Back in the Day Canon engined printers (HP, Canon, Apple) had the advantage of putting a new drum and most of the likely to fail parts in the printer every time you changed the Toner Cartridge making the printers very reliable.

This is still the case. But the investment you are protecting is smaller Since Laser Printers start around $100 it does not matter as much if they die. To an extent the non Canon engined printers tend to have a a little bit cheaper Toner costs since there is no Drum in their replacements.

I still would tend to look to a Canon or HP Laser because I like the reliability, but it matters less then it used to.

As to wiping the drum a soft cloth I suppose. You might have leaky toner cartridge.

Good Luck

Take a look at the fuser rolls. They are usually about 1" in diameter but if yours is larger it may be the source of the problem. (I'm assuming the 2" spacing is significant).
But seriously, anthlover is right. The cost of a new printer is marginal to the cost of toner. And if you buy the same printer the old cartridges will fit.

Fuser shouldn't cause lines like that. The fuser's only job is to melt the already transferred toner to the paper.

There's two places to get horizontal lines: either on the transfer drum or the imaging drum. In many new printers the transfer drum is part of the toner cartridge. The easiest way to test if this is bad is simply to swap another cartridge in. This is step one. If new toner does not change anything, back to the shop it is. You have a bad imaging drum.

I cleaned the transfer drum - which did have a line along it, but no difference really, although the printout errant line is lighter now.

Is the imaging drum usually cleanable?

Taking stuff back to the shop here is a nightmare!

Not supposed to have to do anything on a new printer. Stray Toner can fall on a drum from a leaky Toner and end up fuzed to the page where there was not supposed to be any.

I cleaned the roller that is part of the toner cartridge and the lines are lesser, but not gone.

It goes back to the shop next week when I get home from BKK.
