Just thought I would follow up with this.
1). I got the iPhone I had shipped to me in Alaska activated while I was at SEATAC awaiting my next flight. It operates as expected. I populated it with various "apps" and got it all set up with my wife's AppleID, email, set it up for VPN and other useful things. Then I made a backup to my computer. 2). Once I did that, I ordered the 2nd iPhone, for pickup at an Apple Store in Pittsburgh (big disadvantage is that they tacked on some $24 or so in sales tax), as an add-on to the existing account. It was there when I arrived and they activated it while I was in the store, no issues. Then I "restored" from my previous backup and voila, her phone was more or less set up. I then reconfigured the first phone for my own needs. She got her phone as a surprise Christmas gift while we were there. 3). Both phones operated as expected in the lower 48 AND when I got back to Alaska, they ALSO worked as expected, complete with data, voicemail and whatever. As far as I can tell, they work just like they would if they were "local phones" - they just have a 412 area code. 4). Wife's interview in Pittsburgh went "well" - she was offered the job she wanted (of the two), and accepted it (offer was a little better than she had expected too). So, she will move in early February. I however, will remain in Alaska until some other matters are taken care of (probably 4-6 months). On a related note - from what I can tell, I'm going to hate living in the lower 48 and will probably end up suffering some unfortunate tragic accident - but that's how it goes I guess. FWIW, I just got us both the 64GB versions of the phone (given that I have 500GB just in music). Only a few dollars more, I figured I might as well. Just for phone, I decided to transfer an iTunes rented movie to the iPhone to watch on the plane. However, once on the plane, I couldn't watch it, seemingly because it could not connect to the iTunes store. Just ****ing lame!!!! So, during my layover, I started the movie, just so it could authenticate, and then put it on pause. On my next flight, I was able to watch it with no problems - other than it being completely lame and not worth watching (: So, there you go. Thanks for your help all (: Cheers, oa |

Cool
Glad it all worked out with the phones. Off line movie viewing I think you need to use hand break to rip them to another format out of iTunes. At least you found a work around.

Well, I just wanted to "check it out" - it's not like I want to make a habit of watching movies on a tiny screen. I just wanted to go through the process for the benefit of showing my wife how to do it, if she were interested. Nevertheless, I was kind of surprised a network connection (of some kind) is needed to watch the movie once it is transferred. That's rather disappointing. |
