Screen sharing anomaly

Today, I was using screen sharing through 'Messages ' on my MBP ( Mountain Lion 10.8.2 ), to an iMac in the UK ( Snow Leopard 10.6.8 ). I was trying to set up a new pop a/c for gmail in Mail ( seemed simpler doing it myself than have to explain all to the other person, knowing from experience that setting up a pop gmail in Mail can sometimes not work right ! )

I opened the prefs window - clicked the + sign for new a/c - filled in the first page ok, then held down the option button to change the button to 'continue' , rather than the default 'create' ( which automatically sets up an imap a/c )

It would not allow me to change from the default. Is it not possible to use my keyboard option button, to change the default on another mac through screen sharing ? If not - this seems very strange. ( i made sure that i had admin access to that iMac )

If anyone can let me know whether this should be possible or not, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
