I have new late 2012 iMac and wanting to make a bootable USB stick I attempted to download a copy of ML 10.8.2 from the App Store. When I clicked on download I received the following message:
We could not complete your purchase. OS X Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer. What's going on? Incidentally I was able to download ML 10.8.2 Supplemental Update but that is not the same thing.

It's most likely because the Late 2012 Macs have a special build of 10.8.2 -- i.e. it contains drivers and code specifically for that hardware which is not in the App Store build of 10.8.2.
In short: not all 10.8.2s are equal. I think you'll either have to wait until 10.8.3 to create your ML flash drive installer. Don't forget that your Mac has a Recovery Partition, which you can use in the event of your needing to reinstall the OS. |

Thanks for that. I thought it might be something along those lines.

There may be an Apple app in your Utilities folder called the Recovery Disk Assistant. It creates a bootable USB stick for you and you don't have to download an installer.
