Shared addresses in Mail

I have OS 10.6.8. There's something I would like to be able to do in Mail, but I can't find a way:

I have two friends, John and Mary Smith, who share a single e-mail address. I would like to be able to send messages in which the name appears as "John Smith", or "Mary Smith", or "John and Mary Smith" – as I choose.

I could probably do this by setting up three separate cards in my Address Book, and I'll do this if I have to, but I don't really want to make that file three times as big as it needs to be. Can I somehow get those three names – all with the same address – into the memorized recipients list in Mail?

When I try entering one of them into the address line when sending a message, Mail always defaults to the one that's already there.

3 separate cards i think the only reliable way, using up probably less than 1kb of space in your Address book DB ;-)

All well and good until you need to reset mail and do again. But yes that will work.
