Problem with safari on 10.4.11

Recently my macbook pro (2007 model) has developed a problem with safari, one example is when i go to soundcloud.com safari just quits (seems to be the only site where it does this) the other being that it occasionally goes blue (as if all was selected) and basically freezes so that i have to force quit and reopen, a drag when there are a few windows open, this doesn't seem to depend on anything in particular i.e. any particular key or combination of, is pressed.
Would this be helped by installing 10.5 or later? if so how would i go about doing this and would i lose all the data and need to back up?, i tried to make a partition but it doesn't show the option ,maybe because i have one already that runs windows. I have an external hd but it's about a 3rd full of old stuff from an old pc and it wont let me partition that either without erasing all the data already on it.
any ideas?
thanks for now
Giles

First of all, you need to identify the problem. Safari should run fine on Tiger, all things being equal.
Have you installed any Add-ons for Safari? Got any other third-party software that runs all the time in thew background?

What does the crash log say? It might look like nonsense, but it's likely to refer to specific components of the OS that were involved. It will also list all the software that may have played a part, under "Binary Images".

I would recommend upgrading to Snow Leopard. It's available for not much money directly from Apple. It will install in the place of your existing OS, leaving your user data, settings and apps in place. However, make sure you have a decent backup. (This will be much easier to do using Time Machine after you've upgraded, of course. But you'll need one before that!)

Snow Leopard will run very nicely on your machine. You might want to put in as much RAM as your laptop will take. You should be able to buy RAM very cheaply for your Mac.

No need for any partitioning.

Thanks for that, needless to say it hasn't crashed since i wrote that! but i think i'll take your advice and upgrade to snow leopard, it's only $19.99 from apple and hopefully it may solve that problem as well as enabling me to install a program or two that my current system doesn't support, but will it install directly over 10.4.11 without having to install other versions in-between? (if you see what I mean)
thanks again

Yes, it will.

Of course, as well as allowing some newer apps to run, you may find that if you have much older apps that some of these may not work on 10.6 too!

However, there should be updated versions for most programs where this is an issue.

Note that "Rosetta", the Apple software which allows older PPC apps to run (i.e. apps written for OS X before the move to Intel CPUs), is an optional download. If you launch a PPC app, the OS will ask you if you want to download and install Rosetta. It's fairly automatic, but something to watch out for.

Thanks I will give it a go, just one thought, sorry to be annoying but I bought the machine in Italy as I was living there at the time, so the os is an Italian version (I immediately changed to English) I imagine that this shouldn't make any difference?

The Snow Leopard disk is a complete OS installer. It doesn't upgrade your existing OS: it installs a complete new one. However, it does so whilst leaving everything else intact.

I would be surprised if it reverted to Italian! (Ma, si puņ cliccare sui impostazioni )
