blinking modem

My cable modem is flashing like crazy. it goes in spurts of blinks, sometimes holding onto connection for 2 seconds then flashing again. I tried to download a patch to a game and the connection just goes haywire and i get a notice saying check your internet connection which after the "internet connection seems to be working properly"
Perhaps I need a new cable modem? Internet works fine, but...just not sure how to go about this. This has been going on for about a week now and I got this modem about a year ago.

Have you tried a power-cycle of that modem?
Unplug from power, so the modem is completely off - let it sit with no power for at least 2 minutes.
Plug back in, and power on if there's a power switch or button.
A modem might also respond to a reset. There's usually a reset button, somewhere on the back panel, or maybe the bottom. It's often a small hole, where you insert a pen or a paperclip briefly. That reset and/or the power reset will force the modem to reload its settings, and may get you back to reliability. If not, and the flashing/no connection continures, then you should replace the modem.
