Permissions Remote HD connected to TimeCapsule

I have a remote HD connected to TimeCapsule by USB. I'm trying to set it up as the data drive for QuickBooks Pro 2013 company files, so that in multi-user mode resident computers won't be dependent on a host computer. There is no permanent server set up in this environment, so the host would be a laptop which might be absent.

QB is running on a VMWare virtual hard drive running Windows 7. So far I haven't been able to open files on the remote HD although I can see it and contents from the Mac finder window and from Windows Computer/tree.

QB Tech Support says it's a permissions issue, and claims they can't change or set up permissions on a remote HD.

True?

Thanks.
