Question Mail - Dock shows two instances

Running current Mountain Lion 10.82 on an older dual core MacbookPro 2.4GHz machine. Recently (last 2-3 days) I see TWO instances of Mail.app running simultaneously.

It seems to occur when I use Shift-Cmd-I to email a link to someone. (File > Share > Email link to this page). When I do that, it opens another instance of Mail. I only have one copy installed, and I already reinstalled Mail from a Mountain Lion install disk using Pacifist.

What's causing this, and how can I stop it? Thanks!

Since you said you reinstalled Mail using Pacifist, I suspect you really do have two instances of Mail installed. When you shift-click a Dock icon, it opens a Finder window to the target (you can also right-click, option, show in Finder). Try this on each Mail icon and see if they don't point to different places.
