Question iPod won't mount anymore

Strange. All of the sudden my iPod once plugged in and iTunes running, constantly displays the check mark and "okay to unplug" message. I can't get it to mount at all. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Ciao...

Hiya,

In Itunes click on the Ipod on the bottom of the window (last from the right)

Check that the "Enable FireWire disk use" is checked..

Cheers,

Tried it

Yeah, that's the thing. The icon isn't there. This goes for OS 9 as well. I've had my iPod for well over a year now. This is the first time this has happened.

Does it still sync with iTunes?

If not you might have a broken cable..

Man, I'm losing my mind. I should have mentioned that too. I have two cables and both are doing the same thing. And, the iPod will recharge when plugged in. It just won't mount.

Have you tried a reboot of the iPod?

When it's attached, does the iPod show up as a FireWire device in Apple System Profiler?

Check your FireWire-Port on your Computer (eg. with another Device). It could be dead. (This means, that you can charge your iPod, but you are not able to submit any Data through your FireWire-Port).

ive had the same problem on my ipod in the past. I found that it was a cable problem (probably). It was very intermitant and very very annoying. I think i reset is essential, but if that doesnt work, have you tried someone elses mac? I found thi helped out for some strange reason, though my mac is a brand new imac 17inch so have no idea why.

i ended up getting a new ipod from apple actually, before i could investigate too much more, but that was due to the famous 'battery' issue.

The easy thing I would try is to reboot the computer while the ipod is connected. If that doesn't work, have you tried to force it to mount? To do this you connect the ipod and reset it with the menu and play buttons pressed simultaneously. When you see the Apple logo then press the rewind/previous and the fast forward/next buttons simultaneously. If all goes well the ipod will then say Do not disconnect.

I called my Apple dealer and he said it sounds to him like the FW ports are burned out and they'll have to change the mBoard. This is already the SECOND one the 'puter has had!!

There is a LONG thread over at the apple discussion boards dealing with the dead firewire issue here . The gist of it is that if the FireWire port is providing power, and Apple System profiler shows that you have a FireWire bus, but that nothing is attached to it, then the FW bus is fried, and the mobo must be replaced. On the other hand, if ASP says you don't even have a FW port, then it's a software issue that can sometimes be fixed by resetting the nvram. Seems to happen mostly with the early PBG4's. It happened to my PBG4-400 13 months after purchase, and I didn't get AppleCare (Doh!), so I've been managing with a cardbus FireWire card since then.

Cool Reset firewire

I had the same problem. I found a thread somewhere that suggested to reset firewire ports by shutting down your computer and unplugging for five minutes (I did ten minutes). Make sure all firewire devices are disconnected. Worked for me...

Good luck

Question Busted firewire ports question

[QUOTE=Sully]I called my Apple dealer and he said it sounds to him like the FW ports are burned out and they'll have to change the mBoard.

I know this is a pretty old thread, but I'd be really grateful for an explanation of your comment here - my 4th gen iPod isn't recognized by my desktop (G3 powermac running OS10.2) thru the firewire port. It charges, but the system profiler says no firewire devices are attached. If I purchase a firewire card could that solve the problem? Your comment above makes it sound like I can never get firewire to work on my computer now without changing the motherboard. Is that right?

I've had all of these problems with my 3rd gen iPod, I got in April. I finally got/get it to work (after having it replaced 3 times by Apple) by going back to the earlier software (2.1) and repairing permissions and restarting each time I want to sync with it.

Sometimes I can get away without repairing permissions and restarting, but I have found out that it just isn't worth the trouble it causes if it doesn't sync.

I have a mdd (10.3.5) and also discovered my bottom fw port is not working. This, of course, is the one I used the most as it is the easiest to get at! It does show up but no data transfer. Whether or not it's burned out I don't know, it appers to be from what I have read. I don't know if one can be ok and the other bad, bt seems that is how it is. I may just get a fw pci card and see what happens.

Otherwise, I love my iPod and it works flawlessly!!!

If you're using a dock, try not using it....my iPod was having issues for awhile and I kept having to restore it, clear it, and was having serious problems....i found not using the dock is the best solution...though i'm not sure if is actually the dock's fault, the iPods port, or the cable

Have you checked your Finder preferences?

There's this option to "unmount" some of your hardware (like external HD's)

Another possibility

Another possibility if it is an older iPod is that the firewire port on the iPod has come free from the board (it is soldered on with no strain relief after all). Mine had exactly this behavior - it charged but didn't connect when the power pins of the port were connected but some of the data pins were broken. I soldered mine back together, but I certainly wouldn't recommend that for everyone... There is some folks out there that will do it for you for like $50 or something like that.

Having similar problems since 10.2 with G3 iPod and G4 MDD ... I traced the problem to some type of issure with the other firewire devices... specifically the iSight. When my iPod won't mount or is behaving strangely (like an audio book just recently wouldn't sync up properly), I simply disconnect and reconnect my iSight and all is fine when I try to mount my iPod.
