unnecessary system files
i was wondering, which system files can safely be deleted?
i cleared out all the extra languages i do not understand, threw away printers i do not have, removed applications i'll never use, and still, my 10GB powerbook has only 2 GB left (partly because i still got a 2GB Classic partition). I was wondering, whether and which keyboard files i can safely delete without having to go back later and install them again with pacifist. Also, are there more system files that others have deleted without getting into trouble? (things were so easy way back in OS9) |

Hello,
Personally I wouldn't delete anything, as I consider that playing with fire. I like to keep my OS X partition as vanilla as possible. v |

I think that you got about everything that can be deleted. (I'm assuming that you used a specific application to search and destroy all those foreign language .lproj files, and didn't just do it by hand using Get Info...)
If you have the Developer Tools installed, consider trashing the Documentation. You can burn it to a CD. (Some aliases will not work, probably.) Also, a lot of that is available on-line at ADC. You might want to use Omni DiskSweeper to see what else is taking up a lot of space (such as applications that you don't really use). Don't delete the Receipts. You need those to repair disk permissions.

thanks Russ
you guessed correctly, i used MoxOptimize to get rid of the language files (though there are still some lurking in CoreServices and my fingers are itching ;-) The DevTools Docs are gone as well, especially the 100MB quicktime stuff. As to Disk Sweeper, its best suggestion is trashing MSOffice. a truly useful recommendation in many ways, but alas, for the time being it will have to remain as my biggest and most useless set of conversion tools. anyway, thanks everybody for taking an interest markus |
