Question screenshots & pdfs

Hello

Is there any way to take a screenshot and have it form a .jpg or .tiff? PDFs are nice, but I miss being able to drop them straight into GraphicConverter. I know there are other programs which will allow this, but any way to do it with Apple's cmd-shft-3/4?

I was going to suggest making a little AppleScript applet that will call up Preview, export the file in .tiff, delete the original, and open the exported file in Graphic Converter. You could put the applet on your desktop or in your dock and drop the .pdf file on it.

Only one problem: Preview is not scriptable! At least the dictionary does not show up in script editor. Grab doesn't seem to be scriptable either.

In 10.1 screen capture returned tiff files, but no longer. TinkerTools does not offer this as an option anymore either.

Grab returns .tiff

You probably already know this, and it certainly is not a easy as cmd-shft-3/4, but Grab returns .tiff files.

If you're serious about screenshots, get Snapz Pro X. Take images in TIFF, JPEG, Bitmap (Windows), PICT, PNG, and PSD mode ... record movies ... scale images ... add preview icons ... drop shadows ... etc.

Not an employee, just a very satisfied customer -- I used SnapzPro X for all 300+ screenshots in the new book...

2 step solution

i use the built-in screenshot command.

then i drop the PDF file on the freeware app DropJPG to do what its name implies.

Or just use the built-in cmd-shift-3/4 but hold the control key down at the same time. This places the screenshot on the clipboard. It's then easy to paste it into GraphicConverter.

the format of the clipboard is .pict ?! odd.

might loose some fidelity in the translation?

great thread here, I'm learning all kinds of stuff. A few comments:

- note that JPEG is a lossy compression format, you will lose some fidelity of the image. Is there a drop TIFF?

- PICT is not inherently low resolution. I don't know the specifics, but the clipboard may preserve all of the info in the screen shot.

- GraphicConverter will open a new file directly from the contents of the clipboard using the "New" command. The shortcut for this in GC is command-J. When doing this the import shows up as a PICT file in millions of colors on my computer.

<sorry about this>Hate to advertise my own software but

http://www.efritz.net/software.html

Free, powerful and SERIOUSLY beta. I'm working on some great new features and above all fixing the crashing bug (which I think I fixed today... ), so check it out. It can save in about 12 different formats, with various options, window/object capture and is FREE.

</sorry about this>

You can also try Kunvert which has a Folder Watch feature. It'll convert PDFs into either JPGs or PICTs.

I also use Kunvert and would recommend it... It usually (but not always) appears in the "Open With" contextual menu when you select a PDF file, which is how I use it.

The latest version of GraphicConverter can read PDF files. It's worth paying the upgrade fee, even if he's charging this time around.

Use Preview to convert captured screen image

Try the following:

- Capture the entire screen using "Command-Shift-3" (entire screen) or "Command-Shift-4" (selected area). This creates a PDF file on the desktop.

- Then simply use Preview app to open it and use the "Export .." menu item to convert it a dozen different graphics formats.

You should also consider using the Grab utility, as suggested by some else above. It gives you multiple options to capture and save screen in tiff format.

Resurrecting this old thread to say that I've been using SnapNDrag for various screenshots lately. You can export directly in jpeg and it's got a lot of other nice features. It's freeware, too, which is quite a bargain.
