How do you completely remove KDE?

I installed KDE via Fink and now I'd like to remove it. I'd like to be able to get rid of everything it installed so that it would work too, not just the KDE package.

So, um, what would that/those command(s) be?

Type fink and it will list the commands that it supports.

To uninstall a package that fink has installed, the command is:

fink remove packagename

In this case packagename would be kde? Well, whatever name you installed KDE with. This should go ahead and remove all the packages associated with KDE that fink installed.

This does not ALWAYS work. I have one mysqllib that never has been removed no matter how hard fink tried. I had to go in and remove it by hand.

It's not so easy. Check first your installed packages. Show us the result of:

'fink list -i --section=kde'

Sao's right, in case there are some dependencies that other installed packages have on KDE pieces, you should find out which pieces/parts are installed first.

If you know what you're doing, you can remove by force an installed package with:

dpkg -r --force-depends packagename

except the configuration files and will turn all dependencies into warnings.

Check man dpkg.

By advice of Benjamin Reed (Fink KDE maintainer) you can just do:

sudo apt-get remove arts

...to remove the arts sound server and 'everything' that depends on it (and all of KDE depends on it). That's the easiest way.

Wow, that was relatively painless. Thanks.

After running an update-all it appears I need to download the new Dev Tools to build some qt "thingy." But other than that everything seems fine.
