Question IE Throbber - can it be moded in OS X?

Does anyone know how to modify the spinning "e" throbber in explorer? ResExcellence http://www.resExcellence.com/ has a great selection and you could do it quite easily in OS 9 but I haven't seen anything for OS X.

Wink Yes you can...

It's a little bit more involved than Classic OS9 style hacking. You have to have "ResEdit" along with one additional tool (I use this little freeware app) called "ResConv". "ResConv" is used to convert Data forks into Resource forks (and the other way around).

First you need to locate a file called "Localized.rsrc" in "Internet Explorer":

1.) Control click on "Internet Explorer" and "Show Package Contents"
2.) Go to: Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Localized.rsrc
3.) Make a copy of this file and use "ResConv" (or something similar) to convert it from data to resource
4.) Launch "Classic" and start "ResEdit"

At this point it becomes about the same as the old style hacking. Once you're done making the modifications you want, save the changes to the file and convert it back to data with "ResConv". Name it the same as the original and replace the original "Localized.rsrc" with your new one.

You need to use the "Terminal" to replace the original file with the new one or boot into OS9 to move the file to the correct location in "Internet Explorer's" Contents. You need to be root to perform tasks like these.

Hope this isn't sounding confusing, it's really not that difficult if you've used "ResEdit" before.

Hope this helps...

Talking Awsome!!

Thank you very much ChaChi!! I got it fixed. I found the proper PICT file in a different place so here are my instructions....

Hack your Throbber in IE for OS X.

Lets get this straight first, whether or not you like Explorer...you gotta hate the spinning "e".

There are some great throbbers at resExcellence and instructions on how make them and to put them into OS 9 but I didn't know how to do it in OS X. My thanks to "ChaChi" for pointing me in the right direction. Here is how to do it.

You will need a copy of ResEdit (from resExcellence) and ResConv (free from Black Diamond http://www.blackdiamond.co.za/)

You will want to close up Explorer while you do this so copy these instructions down. Always work on a copy unless you like downloading a lot!

1.) Control-click on "Internet Explorer" and "Show Package Contents"
2.) Go to: Contents/Resources/Internet Explorer.rsrc
3.) Make a copy of this file (control-click then select "duplicate")
4.) Now use "ResConv" (or something similar) to "Convert Data File to Resource File" and save it. Now you can edit it with "ResEdit".
4.) Launch "Classic" and start "ResEdit"
5.) Open your Replacement Throbber with "ResEdit" and then open the "PICT" resource (double-click). We want to get info (cmd-I) for this and make sure the "ID:" is set to 165 - change it if required. Then copy the picture to the clipboard (cmd-C).
6.) Now open your converted Internet Explorer(.dat) file with "ResEdit" and find the "PICT" resource and double click it to open it.
7.) Now just paste in your new throbber (cmd-V) and bye-bye anoying spinning "e"! Save your work (cmd-S), and we're almost done.
8.) Now we want to use "ResConv" to "Convert Resource File to Data File" and save it back to it's original name (Internet Explorer.rsrc).
9.) Copy it back into place and boot up IE to your new throbber!

PS. If you want to change the splash screen you can find it in: Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Localized.rsrc (PICT ID: 401)

Thanks to Mac OS X hints (www.macosxhints.com) and ResExcellence (www.ResExcellence.com).

I'm glad that all came across right. Your instructions look a lot more complete than mine did, kudos and AMEN to hacking IE!!! And it was all for free!!! That's the way it should be. Sorry about the rhyme.

Till' next time...(sorry about another rhyme)
