Lightbulb Insight to the -36 SMB connection issue

This is not a question, rather it is my successful attempt of connecting to my PC, via SMB, which I would like to share:

I like many other have had the infuriating experience of trying to connect to a Windows 2000 PC, via MacOS X, only to be confronted with the -36 error (note to Apple - please could you make the error message 'authentication error', since that's what it appears to be).

My scenario happens at home where there are only two computer on my network and my internet connection is via a Linksys router. My PC happens to be a portable that has been set up for a Windows domain, since I also use it at work. When I brought the portable home and tried connecting to it I got the -36 error. In the 'connect to server' dialogue, the PC appears in its own 'zone'. On a hunch I decided to try what would happen if I modified my PC's settinsg so that it appeared in the same zone as my Mac, which is currently defined as 'workgroup'. I restarted my PC and the tried to connect to it and hey presto it worked, without any fuss.

I have now changed the workgroup to another name and it still works.

For those of you having problems connecting to the Windows 2000 PC, with error -36, do you know whether it is in a workgroup or domain? If it is in a domain, is you Mac registered for the Windows domain? Also, for the case of a domain, when trying to connect to the PC is it connected to the Windows domain server? Also, does putting your user name in the form domain\user make a difference? Since I am now without a domain, I can't verify this until I go to work.
