Can't refresh file list of shared SMB volume

I'm sharing a drive on my laptop PC (Windows 98) over SMB and accessing it with my Mac (10.2.2) on a home LAN. The connect-to address is smb://192.168.0.5

Everything works pretty much as it should, except when files are added on the PC into the shared drive. If the folder has been seen in the Finder on my Mac, the file list will NEVER again update. Closing the Finder window and reopening doesn't do it; changing view type doesn't refresh it. Deleted files go away only when you click on them in column view. New files never show up.
The only way to get an updated file list is to disconnect and reconnect the shared volume. Obviously, this is undesireable.

BTW, Firewall is off.

Any ideas?

I've been seeing reports of this happening with Windows 2000 Server as well. It's unclear which end is causing the problem.

You might want to check over at MacWindows. I think they have some people tracking this.

If you find a solution, please let us know. Thanks and good luck.

Workarounds

I've found a few workarounds, but now solutions as of yet.

1) Use the terminal. In the terminal type "cd " and drag the offending folder from the Finder into the terminal window (the directory path is copied into the command line). Hit enter in the terminal. You can then "ls" to see all the files. "open", "cp", "rm" and all the rest should work.

2) drag a visible file out of the finder window to copy it somewhere. the rest of the file list will be refreshed.

3) copy a file into the folder. the rest of the file list will be refreshed.

4) Restart the Finder

None of those suggestions did anything for me (OSX Panther -> Windows XP Pro).

Anyone else have any other tricks?

It seems the only way I can access newly created shared folders on my windows machine is by entering their exact address like so (Go -> Connect to Server):

smb://username@192.168.0.100/sharedfolder/

Good enough for me!
