File transfers through Airport base station very slow
I seem to recall, several months ago, that a certain update to OS X caused havoc with Airport base stations.
I didn't notice at the time - since I don't use mine to transfer files often - but I have now realized that file transfer through the base station is very slow: around 20 to 30 k/sec. Curiously, this only occurs when data is going out of the base station. My iBook uses Airport for network access, but my iMac is wired to the network. When transferring files to the iBook from the iMac, I get this slow speed. But when going in the other direction, I get a much faster speed, around 300 k/sec. (Note that this is still slower than a computer-to-computer Airport connection, which clocks in at around 600 k/sec.) In addition, I get a sustained 64 k/sec download speed from the Internet (ADSL -> ABS) on the iBook, which shows that the problem is limited to file transfers. FTP is also very slow, though Timbuktu transfers are fast. So, I have determined that the ABS is clearly the problem. Can anyone point me to anything about this firmware upgrade that screwed things up? (This is a graphite ABS.) I need to find out how to get on Apple's case to fix it - I'm not sure if it's still under guarantee, but the problem was clearly caused by the upgrade, since prior to that the transfer speed was fine. THanks for any help on this, Kirk |
