AppleWorks and Times font.

I have recently noted the following problem with my Times font in AppleWorks:

On the screen, everything looks as it should, but in the printed copy, the letters 'v' and 'w' have a little space following them...not quite the width of a space. If I change the font over to another font (and I've tried quite a few) and print, there is no problem. It is v ery annoying w hen reading ev ery document is like v iew ing output from a bad typew riter. I like 'Times' and don't want to switch.

I imagine my Times Font got corrupted somehow. I've already re-installed AppleWorks, but the problem still remains. What next? Does anyone else have this problem? I think I'll delete the FontCache (com.apple.FCacheUserDomain) and try again, if I can find the locations of all of them.

Thank you in adv ance. :-)

I've removed
com.apple.ATSServer.00039389293A.FODB_Classic
com.apple.ATSServer.00039389293A.FODB_Local
com.apple.ATSServer.FODB_User, com.apple.FCacheClassicDomain, and com.apple.FCacheDomain
from ~/Library/Caches, logged out and back in again. The problem still persists.

If I log out and log in under an unused account I created for troubleshooting circumstances such as these, AppleWorks no longer has the problem. Even though I can't imagine that the AppleWorks preferences have anything to do with this problem, I guess I'll delete them and try again.

I deleted the abovementioned files again, and the AppleWorks folder in ~/Library/Preferences, and the AppleWorks Preference file, restarted and I still have the problem.

If I do a 'Preview' from the print dialog prior to printing, or 'Save as PDF', everything is as it should be in these documents. But if I print out to our HP 4050 series or 4000 series LaserJet printers, the problem is still there.

It is not related to our printers, however, because if I try AppleWorks from another account (unused except for troubleshooting) everything prints out fine.

What am I missing?

Aaaargh!

I put my ~/Library/Caches and my ~/Library/Preferences folders in the trash (in the Finder) and restarted. I *still* had the problem!!! What else is there about my local account (as far as printing Times from AppleWorks is concerned) that is different from another user's account?

PS: I also repaired permissions using Disk Utility from the Jaguar CD (following a suggestion from sbur) but that did not fix it either.

sounds like a kerning problem to me. does the string "AV" exibit this behavior?

disk utility's permissions repair isn't going to touch anything in the /Users dir tree.

i wonder if you have any fonts installed in ~/Library/fonts

show is the detail of the Times fonts...

$ ls -l {/System,}/Library/Fonts/Times*
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root admin 0 Sep 25 08:44 /Library/Fonts/Times New Roman
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 412019 Jul 18 20:02 /System/Library/Fonts/Times.dfont

$ ls -l /Library/Fonts/Times\ New\ Roman/rsrc
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root admin 376249 Sep 25 08:44 /Library/Fonts/Times New Roman/rsrc

Hi. Thank you for your help.

The 'A' and the 'V' are unnaturally far apart when I type 'AV' as well.

The results of those two commands are about the same as they were for you:

[lebesgue:~] lebesgue% ls -l {/System,}/Library/Fonts/Times*
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root admin 0 Sep 23 13:06 /Library/Fonts/Times New Roman
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 412019 Jul 18 22:02 /System/Library/Fonts/Times.dfont
[lebesgue:~] lebesgue% ls -l /Library/Fonts/Times\ New\ Roman/rsrc
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root admin 376249 Sep 23 13:06 /Library/Fonts/Times New Roman/rsrc

But, since the other account has no problems printing Times, I am no longer suspecting anything wrong with Times, itself.

I used to have 3 screen fonts and 129 postscript fonts installed in ~/Library/Fonts. These are viewing and postscript printing fonts for OzTeX (a TeX engine for the Macintosh I use in addition to teTeX). They should not impact AppleWorks and Times, should they (none of their names are anywhere close to 'Times'). I took them out in my quest to make my account look like the account that was not having problems.

[Fixed typos only.]

Since migrating to OS X as early as 10.0 (I am now running 10.2.1 and AppleWorks 6.2.4), I have experienced heinous kerning problems with certain PostScript fonts when printing from AppleWorks.

Interestingly, if I save problem AppleWorks files as ClarisWorks 4 files, open them in ClarisWorks under Classic and print from there, the kerning is once again as it should be.

So for me, the kerning problems seem to occur only with AppleWorks in OS X, have occurred under all versions of OS X, and only seem to occur when I am using PostScript fonts (though all PostScript fonts are not affected).

I was very interested to see that macmath's kerning problem only occured when he was logged in as a particular user. I will test this on my end and see if my experience is the same.

I would REALLY like to solve this. I have seen some discussion of this problem on Apple's forums, but have never seen a solution or a clear assignment of blame (though I am inclined to point my finger at AppleWorks itself).

Not only are there kerning issues, but leading is rather variable as well in AppleWorks. I compared the same text repeated over several lines at 14 points, a different font for each line in AW and Illustrator. The Apple works printout had a different leading for each font whereas the Illustrator output was consistently spaced between lines.

I created a new account for myself and tranferred my files over (and with mervTormel's help I was able to change the permissions over to my new identity). Once I was satisfied that I had indeed transferred over everything that I needed, I deleted all the contents of the 'Documents' folder (and thus anything AppleWorks saved in its User Data folder) and *all* of the contents of 'Library'. I then restarted. The kerning of the Times font is still bad (upon printing from AppleWorks; as above, the view from the screen [or if saving as a PDF and printing from the PDF file] are fine)!

So, I am really at a loss as to what it is about the old account which causes AppleWorks to kern Times improperly when it kerns Times just fine in the new account. With all preferences gone, one would think that it would be almost like a brand new account? I don't think I'll delete the old account because I am afraid the problem will then visit my new account. I'll let you know if I ever do figure something out; in the mean time, this is all the new information that I have.
