Give Audio In a try. Simple little app that lets you record aiff's.

When I bought my portable, ((long time back,) wallstreet) a mic was built in, above the screen and to the right. Do the new powerbooks no longer have one? Also, just the system software was enough to record.

You can use iTunes to make mp3's out of them.

It totally depends on the length of the audio that you're converting and the quality that you're hoping for. If the files that you mention are in aiff format, then you can convert them to mp3 with little or no loss of quality and, unless you're really 'going on', probably fit them onto a cd.

If the AlBooks are anything like my 15" TiBook (and I assume they are), they still have a microphone built in. Best I can tell the microphone is located right next to the left speaker.

Definately use iTunes to convert your AIFF files to MP3. Use the highest MP3 setting for good quality sound.

Save some steps

If you want to save some time, try using the freeware product Audio Recorder 1.4 . It lets you record audio direct to disk in AIFF or MP3 format. If you use MP3, you'll save disk space and won't have to encode the data later. Granted, you won't have recourse to a "high quality" AIFF, but for simple voice work, MP3 should be more than adequate.

I used this program to record several hour-long interviews with my PowerBook's internal mic and it works well. Plus, it's scriptable, which I'm told is all the rage with the kids these days.

FYI all the portables in recent history have a built in mic for audio in. quality leaves something to be desired. but, it works.

ibooks do NOT however have a line in (at least my ibook500 did not, and my fianceé's ibook 700 do not). for these you'll need an imic or similar device.

all powerbooks have a line in 1/8" jack so you can use a better mic, if you have/need one.

Data cd or standard playable-in-anything audio cd?

Audio cd's hold 74 minutes of stereo audio, divided into up to 99 tracks. Period. End of discussion. The longer cd's in the stores may have problems playing past 74 minutes. It depends on the player.

If you are only recording speech, convert the aiff files to mp3 mono, 64kbps and you should be able to put over 12 hours on one cd. You'll never notice a quality loss. If you want to send it to windows users you'll have to play around with the disk image format, a standard Finder burn won't work.
