Unhappy Emacs Freeze on Logout

I have three labs of emacs running 10.2.8 with OSX server, Two of the labs never have logout problems. In one lab-physically seperated and on a different server node, otherwise identical (we think!) the machines frequently (20% approx.) freeze or hang when users logout--the machines freeze with a the desktop image visible.

Anyone seen this before or know of a solution? We have tried a number of fixes, to no avail.

Yes, we repair permissions frequently--in fact, is there some form of shareware that will automatically repair permissions for each machine every day??

Daily? That is not necessary. The real only time you really should have to repair permissions is after an install that asks for your admin password. Even then, you could easily go for a few months without doing it and suffer no ill effects.

When you try to force quit, what is open and running? Classic, by any chance?

The logout freeze will occur when all apps have been quit and only in OS10. We initially thought it may have to do with background images, as it seemed to occur with users who had customized their desktop backgrounds, but we have since seen the freeze occur with the default desktop background as often as customized backgrounds.

So no apps are running except Finder. And with a newly created user does this happen? Does the Finder stay open on the freeze, or does the finder quit too and you're left with the pinwheel spinning forever?

-It happens do often and so randomly that we haven't noticed a pattern. We could create a new user and repeatedly log in and out to see if the freeze will occur, but we haven't tried this.

The finder quits, no spinning pinwheel, just a frozen computer showing the bare desktop pattern, no icons.

Thanks for trying to help!!

This is an important step in determining if the problem is localized to the particular user or possibly with an app/OS/machine itself.

I don't use it personally, but I think Macaroni will do this.

Also, you have given all the problem machines a good does of DiskWarrior (or equivalent) right? Have you tried unplugging the machines from the network and loggin in and out repeatedly? That won't fix the problem, but it will let you know if you're troubleshooting a Computer or a network component. It's worth a shot.
