i dream of dark desktop text
i dream of dark desktop labels / text / font
like Pathfinder - and apparently only Pathfinder - offers. Without running Pathfinder. I would be semi-happy if I could lighten or do away with the frikking shadow. Looked everywhere, possibly overlooked, don't tell me it can't be done. .. please don't tell me that. Please. |

I won't tell you it's impossible.
Have you asked Max? You can check in his forum to see if this has been covered before. http://www.funmac.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=51 Or, if you know Japanese check out the desktopper site. http://www.desktopper.net/ These are two guys who know the OS X GUI, and how to modify it, inside out. |

i have to go all the way to japan to find somebody else who hates this gleaming white shadowed text? i'm that weird? i can't believe it - or it wouldn't be an easy option for pathfinder. this is very strange.
and, my japanese skills are a bit rusty at the moment, but thanks. . <sigh> |

Try translating the page...
http://babelfish.altavista.com/translate.dyn Choose Japanese to English translation and put the desktopper URL in the Translate a Web page box. It works pretty good!

Black text is indeed possible - I installed something I was testing out before I installed Panther and it had a setting to change to black text. Now I can not find out what it was though. Somewhere though there is a utility that has this as an option.

The Babelfish
No disrespect to Doug Adams, but the Altavista Japanese-English Babelfish kinda sucks. It's good enough to get a very general impression of what's on a page, but that's it. Works well when the languages are similar (English/Spanish/German etc) but asian languages are so different it can't be done by a machine. We have umpty-thousand dollar pro translation software at work, and it was a big waste of money.

Re: The Babelfish
If you don't mind having a label for your file or folder, the text in the label is black.

Re: Re: The Babelfish
Hmm, you could add a folder action to the desktop folder to automatically give a label color to any file or folder added to the desktop. Then if you could find a way to change one of the label colors to "transparent" you'd be all set. Or keep an eye out on some of the themes made for Shapeshifter: http://unsanity.com/haxies/shapeshifter/ I think you will start seeing some things like dark desktop text that were considered impossible in the past. |

Re: The Babelfish
Oh, absolutely. It is at least an alternative to seeing characters that give you zip. Me? I wish I had the little fishy to put in my ear.

Dark desktop text (or at least non white-bold-shadowed text) has been something I have longed for since OS X beta. If you hate it as much as I do don't forget to send feedback... about having an option (even as a terminal command or a plist edit) to change the text's appearance.
Note you can get rid of the shadow with Silk but Silk has other issues and is one of Unsanity's less stable apps. Unlike windowshade which I find indispensable, I haven't been able to use Silk on production machines. |

And as far as you, bluehz, may your eyeballs implode. . . I swear, it doesn't exist. But hold hope for Max Themes in future. Thanks all, Zo |
