IE quits unexpectedly

Hi everyone - my IE seems to "quit unexpectedly" from time to time - how do I get the application from the startup cd? Do I have to reinstall all applications? Are there other ways to get rid of this problem? i read a thread mentioning runing a fsck and doing a disk permission repair - how? - I checked the latest updates.

Just curious as to why you aren't using Safari?

I do not know how to get IE off your install disc, but you can probably just download it from apple.com

Use Pacifist to get it off the install CDs. It's not downloadable from Apple, but version 5.2.3 IS downloadable from Microsoft.

However, I seriously doubt there is a need to reinstall the app to fix your problem. Most likely there is a preference that you can remove and your problem will be fixed. The key is looking at the IE crash reports generated by you. You can find them in your home directory, in Library/Logs/CrashReporter/.

For fsck, either boot from your OS X install CDs and run First Aid from the Disk Utility, or boot into single user mode and run fsck manually. To do this, reboot, hold down command (apple) & s. When you see the prompt, type /sbin/fsck -y and hit return. Type reboot and hit return to reboot.

Ok - something went wrong there I basicly donīt use Safari because you need to have the latest OSX to download it for free. (I have 10.1.5) And for a long time EI was working perfectly, so...

I dont have a CrashReporter in the log folder. There is a DiskCopy and a java console ???

~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ doesn't exist?

What version of OS X are you using here?

I think on 10.1 you have to turn on crash reporting from /Applications/Utilities/Console preferences. dD

Thats true - just turned it on... So now I just have to wait for another crash... (Downloaded and installed IE again by the way)

Let me just say that I appreciate the feedback here. Itīs great to have a place to turn to with my questions.

Nothing in that crash report leaps out at me and says 'I am the culprit!'. There's an awful lot of Java complaints in there.. Is your startup page screwy maybe? It's been quite some time since I used 10.1.x. About the only thing I can offer is try removing the pref for IE. It should be found in ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.explorer.plist . At least in Jaguar & Panther, that's where it's found.
You also might want to try moving the ~/Library/Preferences/Explorer/ directory to your Desktop and then open IE. If that worked, then you can replace your favorites from the original and move on.

You'll never go back.

I know that doesn't solve why M$ IE is crashing, but it may solve the problem.
