fink & panther [official fink release?]

ha! i'm sure yet another post on this subject ....

when will fink 'officially' be supporting panther? i see the disclaimer on the right side that states:

Quote:
Fink 0.5.3 was released on 22 June 2003. Note that this release does not support the upcoming OS X version 10.3. A new release which will support 10.3 is under active development.

i just want to wait to update until it's fully supported, as fink/x11 >= 80% of my usage

Surprised?...not really. That info was posted only a couple of hours ago, when it could have been posted much before, in order to have given time to prepare, to the average MacOS X user who was planning to install 10.3 today.

Many fink users not only in USA, but from around the world and in different time zones, who were and are installing Panther today needed feedback from Fink and didn't have "any clear and simple" guidance beforehand. Mule, I think you told me once, you are helping the Fink Project in PR, right? So, what happened?

vancenase,

I am in the same boat (with the 80%).
fink is great, but I couldn't get it
to work with Panther (clean install).
(Well, I could install stuff like
"aspell", but system-xfree86-43
was not found...)
I need ghostview, octave,
gnuplot, gnumeric, and friend badly...

I guess time too wait till the pros
make it more digestible...

max_zorn,

Well, Fink is working well here, after I followed some of the info supplied in the last days by the Fink Developers.

I did and archive and install of 10.3 and installed Apple's X11 1.0, Xcode, the X11SDK, and then I run 'fink selfupdate' and had to install fink-prebinding separately. And once more 'fink selfupdate'.

Now things are looking good!

Dear sao,

thanks for your commment!

I did a clean intall with the same tools as you (Apple's X11 1.0, Xcode, the X11SDK), and spend a day fiddling to get fink working again before I gave up and deleted /sw.

The fink website is in constant flux, now they do mention that you don't need system-xfree86-43 installed. Unfortunately, your instructions (as well as theirs) are too advanced for me, I would require line by line instructions... (There is some cleanup to do in fink's documentation, in view of the fact that bash is now the default shell, for instance...)

Unrelatedly, does anyone have experiences with darwinports? In despair, I was trying this but their cvs server timed out after 2 hours. Their documentation looks excellent, although more ports are needed at this point.

Moral: if you don't really know what you're doing (like me), then wait . Only the patient fools will be rewarded...

I just did this same sequence. It worked fine up until Fink got to gtk+-1.2.10-23. Here is what looks like the relevant portion of the log:

Code:
checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.8... yes
checking for X... no
configure: error:
*** X libraries or include files not found. Check 'config.log' for
*** more details.
### execution of ./configure failed, exit code 1
Failed: compiling gtk+-1.2.10-23 failed
Also, if this helps:

Code:
$ gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/libexec/gcc/darwin/ppc/3.3/specs
Thread model: posix
gcc version 3.3 20030304 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 1495)

$ fink -V
Package manager version: 0.16.0
Distribution version: 0.6.0.cvs
