Exclamation .ds_store... Panther?

Does anyone know if Apple will stop using .ds_store files for window / folder information in Panther or any futher releases? Or, does anyone know an automatic way to delete .ds_store files on Windows 2000 / 2003 servers?

Basically, I'm sending PDF / PS files to a windows based server into a "hot folder" which then RIPs the files for Printing purposes. The Windows server crashes when it tries to manipulate, RIP, the files.

Apple has given me the run around, and I figured i'd ask here.

Thanks for the help ahead of time.

I'm not sure what Panther does, but I don't think it's any different than Jaguar -- the file system is still the same, there's just a newly modified Finder in front of all of it.

From the main site, this hint or perhaps this one will help remove the files once they're there...

Panther still uses .DS_Store files, unfortunately.

I talked with Apple, they told me they didn't know if Panther would use .ds_store at all.

This is unfortunate, my company will not upgrade the rest of our computers to OS X until they can fully work with Windows servers correctly.

Thanks for the help

This should fix it.

I found the solution on this very site.

This config for samba will prevent OS X from placing ds_store files on the windows machines. I realize the hint is for UNIX, but samba is used to connect to windows as well - so it should work just fine. There are a few problems associated with it, sounds like some people have had trouble copying whole directories - it sort of depends on what you're doing.

No luck on that, I'm connecting to a Windows 2000 server.
Thanks for the help though.

I find it quite important to have a file for each folder, which holds all the info for it ... can imagine to have a central database with all the info inside and after you change the name of one of your 10000 folders the database gets screwed ... no thank you ...

if the Windows machine is crashing - it is for sure not a good way to disable that in panther but to deleted it after connection or something similar

I mean the Finder needs to store the info (position, size, view, background etc.) about each window somewhere. And if it would be organised in a central database, you would screw any system by moving around, renaming or copying folders. So it has to be a "file" within the folder ...

I just wish that Apple would find a different way to manage views and folder structure.... .ds_store creates a ton of issues on server platforms. OR! I wish my server applications ran on Apples Servers!
