Formac's Studio TVR is something I have been looking at, it is $399. I have VHS tapes I would like to convert to DVD. It is similar to their Studio DV, but adds the abilty to record from TV

Comparison CanopusADVC-100 & Formac Studio

Anyone have any comparison information between the Canopus ADVC-100 and the Formac Studio TVR for converting VHS tapes to digital. A friend of mind tried another product a while ago and said that the quality was fair and that there was a slight off-synch of the audio and video. Any problems with either of these?

Thanks

Peter

We bought a Formac a year ago with our G4-dual. It was DOA so I returned it and bought a Canopus. It has worked great for a year now. Oh yea... it's also a lot smaller and I believe it was about $100 less too.

The ADVC100 locks the audio and video, so audio sync issues should not be there. I'm not sure about the new formac products.

The original Formac studio (from 2 years ago) had poor video interlacing (or is it de-interlacing) in the conversion. I could easily see lines in the video, that the ADVC100 did not create. I have not seen output from a new Formac converter, so I can't speak about that one.

I've used the Canopus without a hitch for over a year. The only problem I ever had was a buzzing in the audio which was due to the firewire cable lying too close to a Halogen desklamp (thanks to the Canopus forums for helping me figure that out). I simply turned that lamp off, no subsequent issues.

Tips on using the Canopus

I will probably purchase the Canopus. My goal is to make a short digital video clip from a VHS tape to insert into a Keynote presentation. Any ideas on how I can get the sharpest video with the best resolution.

Thanks
