Can't shut down
Hi. I have a problem with my iMac DV running OS 10.1.5. I've never had a problem like this.
Whenever I click shutdown from the menu, or control eject, it restarts. It doesn' shut down. I must hold down the power button. My apple dealer doesn't know what the problem is. It happened during the power outage a while back - but I have an industrial surge protector, adn my computer was off when the power went off (i immediately disconnected everything so when power came back, i waited 6 hours before plugging it back in). Any ideas? |

Sorry it's been a long time since I've had Puma, but I'll give it a shot. Do you have "Restart automatically after a power failure" checked in the Options Tab of your Energy Saver preference pane?

Puma is the name of 10.1? Cool. Never knew that. I used to, but i turned it off a while black (after the problems) with no resolution to the problem. Thanks for the response. |

Hmm.. have you tried zapping the PRAM?
Reboot, hold down P + R + Option + Apple, let it go after the 4th boot chime. |

No, I haven't. What does it do to the computer? Does it delete/alter anything?
Thanks a lot. |

Its a tiny file for booting up that recreates a fresh copy when "zapped." When corrupted, it can cause all sorts of similair issues like yours. No harm except date/time resetting.

what do you mean, No Chimes, the system must chime when holding those keys down at boot, and will continue to chime every few seconds as long as you hold them. Are you saying, no chime at all, or the reset (which is what's happening) accomplished nothing
Once your system IS shutdown, does it stay shutdown? (Does not start by itself) Last edited by DeltaMac; 09-29-2003 at 09:19 PM. |

No chime at all and it still doesn't work. The only way to shutdown the computer is to hold down the power button for 5-10 seconds or manually shut off using the power button. Then it stays shut down. If I use the menu of Ctrl-Eject adn click on shutdown, it shuts down, then after 1 second of being off it starts back up. |

Let's do a system reset
Power off.... Press power switch and immediately hold the Opt-Apple-o-f (that's letter O, and letter F) After a delay, you will see a light grey or white screen with several lines dark text. Type reset-nvram (press enter) you should see 'ok' Then type reset-all (press enter again) your system will reboot, (you should hear startup chime at that point, if not, maybe your sound is not working at all???) Look carefully at your power switch, (put your head down, and look directly at the button) Is the light exactly in the center of the button, or is it offset to one side? this model iMac has a physical problem when the light is not in the center of the button, and drags on the button, causing the power button to stick in, and can cause this issue. The fix is to disassemble the case for access to the button and LED, The LED can be gently moved to the center, or sometimes the button has to be gently sanded so it doesn't stick anymore. If your button does not 'hang' and LED is centered, and you've the other tricks, then storm has caused some hardware failure (the little card the power switch mounts on sometimes fails), take it to an Apple service center. |

Will this only reset the pram? The first part of your reply i'm talking about? Sorry about my lack of knowledge! I'll blame it on my age

For an in-depth discussion of the relationship between nvram and pram have a look at this thread.

Thanks a lot for all of your help guys....sorry for the delayed response, i'm getting owned by homework.
I reset my nvram, but it still won't shut down. I've tried both P-R-Opt-CMD and CMD-Opt-P-R but it just starts up normally, no chimes, no difference except my hands get tired.... |

Turn the computer off.. press the power button.. immediately hold down p and r and option and the apple key... Keep holding.. the machine should chime again, never starting up fully. Keep holding it down until the 4th time it chimes, then let it boot as normal. |

What's the sequence you're doing? All keys would be held down together, not one-at-a-time!

Yes, i know they are not one at a time.
I looked at Mac help and (under classic it is cmd-?) and it said to hold down opt-cmd-r-p when restarting and release after second chime. I did exactly that. It reset my clock, but not my monitor settings (which are not the factory defaults). And alas, my problem still remains.
