Pref Panes Icon?
I made a folder of aliases to all my pref panes from:
/Library/PreferencePanes /System/PreferencePanes ~/Library/PreferencePanes All of the aliases have the standard blue folder icon. Where can I find the real icons for the pref panes? I looked in the package on some of them. There were some tiff files there but no way that I could see to do the standard cut and paste icon trick.

Hey that's a cool idea. A quick way to get a particular pref pane heh?
I think you can use Iconographer (Shareware) to open the tiffs and save them as icns files. Apple's Developer tools also come with some Icon making programs. |

I did a ctrl-click on the prefpane and chose 'view package'.
There was a .icns file in the 'resources' portion of the package, which I double-clicked, opening them in preview. I chose the first one, which was the 128x128 version, and clicked 'copy'. I then did a get-info on the alias of the prefpane, selected the icon, did a paste, and the alias changed to the prefpane icon. Is your problem locating the icon, or applying it? I think most of them are going to contain the .icns file in the resources, but not all. For instance, my logitech pref pane had no icon file, but there was a .gif or .tiff that actually worked when I pasted it from preview. I was actually surprised it worked. |

Thanks - both methods worked. I used an app called Pic2Icon to do a few of them.
I was surprised that the paste from preview trick works. it seems to be the easiest way. Thanks again.

Wow. Never thought of that. Been using Dockprefs for ages. Even works in Panther.

Dockprefs is a good app.
I wanted to create the folder of aliases to use with a few other programs, like X-Assist and Dock Launcher. It's also handy to keep in one's Favorites folder.
