Safari unexpectedly quits on launch
iMac G4/800/15"
Safari 1.0 (v85 gold master) I've tried everything I can think of to get Safari to work. It used to, but since downloading the 1.0 version, it unexpectedly crashes on launch. The Console says to look at the Safari.crash.log and that file has a kernel panic in it. (I will post the KP when I have access to the machine - it's a friend's). I have done the following and none have worked: - Switched off Unsanity's APE - Created a new user and ran Safari - Deleted prefs files and ran Safari - Reinstalled Combo Update 10.2.6 - Fixed permissions using Disk Utility - Uninstalled everything to do with Safari - Downloaded and installed new copy from Apple's site Any ideas? Thanks.

Very nice troubleshooting procedure. Since it's not a userland problem (you verified that by making a new user, no need to delete prefs), I'd be inclined to believe that it has to do with one of the frameworks that Safari installs.
For example, the latest Safari updates the Foundation framework, be sure to check for that when you get the console.log and system.log: Code:
% lsbom /Library/Receipts/Safari.pkg/Contents/Archive.bom|grep Foundation.framework ./System/Library/Frameworks/Foundation.framework... v |

Cheers Von, I'll try that later on tonight.

Sorry, that didn't fix it. The iMac already had a Foundation.framework. I moved it, copied mine and tried it, but Safari didn't even unexpectedly quit - the application triangle in the Dock appeared twice and disappeared. Nothing in the console for that either...
I have now put the original framework back. Here's the KP I mentioned earlier: Code:
Date/Time: 2003-07-10 23:58:25 +0100
OS Version: 10.2.6 (Build 6L60)
Host: xxxxx.local.
Command: Safari
PID: 555
Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000

Does anything else crash or just safari? I believe that exc_bad_access error is when the system tries to access something in the system or virtual memory and the data its digging for is corrupted or incorrect. If you got the apple hardware test cd that came with the machine, boot off it and test your ram. This is just a hunch, and may or may not have anything to do with your problem.

Thread 0 Crashed:
#0 0x00000000 in 0x0 hex 0 is an invalid memory address. it's prolly not RAM. something else, regarding unicode. i'd say it's time to reinstall, say, the 10.2.x combo update and safari again. [edit: oh, you did that. ::shrug::] |

Thats why I suggested testing the ram, thats the only thing I could think of off the top of my head by reading the situation and steps already taken.

Yeah, I've tried reinstalling the combo update and Safari, but to no avail
It simply won't run, which is annoying as it was me and my friend who made my friend's mum buy her iMac! (Did that sentence make sense???)The only other thing I can do is back up her hard drive to my spare, and reinstall the whole machine That's a bit drastic though. Thanks for the suggestions so far. You guys rock! Any other ideas?

Did you try removing (to your desktop) all the junk in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/? If one of those is causing it, then it could be why it follows you to a new user.

OH also, what does it say in the system.log right before safari crashes? You posted the safari crash log but not this, it may say something.

I've not been to my friend's house, though I have e-mailed them to give them your suggestions. Patience Daniel-San...

I had the same problem and did all the head-scratching, Safari file erasing you can think of until I found the fix on MacFixIt. Just find and trash
com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist now, Safari 1.0 works like a charm again ![]() Pass the word around since we are many to have suffered from this bug. Cheers Ebara |

Safari also installs/updates the WebKit.framework, which was apparently corrupt on my install, causing Safari to crash on launch. Deleting the framework and reinstalling safari has fixed it.

Neither of those two suggestions fixed it
![]() Thanks anyway, but I think she's going to do a reinstall of the OS - her iMac has been experiencing a lot of beach ball spinning recently, even after installing more RAM (and no, the RAM didn't cause that or Safari to knack up). Besides, it'll give her something to do

Oh, well, colour me shocked... Guess who had to do the flippin' reinstall? No, no, no, no, no. It was me.
And it all works fine. It even seems to have ended her almost perpetual spinning beach ball problem too. Unfortunately, this doesn't explain why it happened in the first place, and it could even happen again... ![]() Cheers for the help guys.
