Unhappy Strange Safari crash

Gents,

Safari works great when I use it (using v74 right now). But when my daughter logs in and tries to use it, it immediately crashes after it opens it's browser window. I have tried removing the Safari files from her Library folder (/Library/Safari and /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist). It didn't help. I also replaced those files with mine which also didn't help. It still immediately crashes. Netscape works fine for her (yuk!).

Any ideas that might help? BTW, we are using 10.2.6, if that matters.

Matt

You could also try deleting everything inside of:

~/Library/Caches/Safari/

[edit] the '~' means her user account. Sorry if you already knew that but you didn't use the convention in your original message [/edit]

Dave,

Unfortunately it's still crashing after deleting that also. If it helps, I also reinstalled Safari and Mac OS X 10.2.6 combo-update, ran and repaired disk permissions with Disk Utility, and ran all of the maintenence/repair functions of Jaguar Cache Cleaner. None of these helped BTW.

When I launch it (in her account) it bounces, and then open it's browser window. Then you here what sounds like a bunch of windows opening, except nothing else opens. Then it crashes. I find this working for one user but not another truly bizarre.

I had forgotten about the "~" convention. Thanks for helping.

The cache removal is a good idea. When Safari starts up, does it load a home page or is it supposed to be blank?

Have you tried logging in to her account while holding down the shift key to disable any third party software from loading. It's possible that this is a conflict with something she has running on her account only.

bassi,

It was set up to open the Earthlink home page. I changed it to open Yahoo as a home page. It crashed whenever it tries to open either one. When I delete the homepage selection of the Web tab on the Internet System Preferences panel, Safari does not crash but opens a blank page. As soon as I ask it to open a page (even Apple.com) it immediately crashes. I don't think it's a general internet setting because Netscape or iCab works when she is logged in.

djn1,

If I log in with the shift key down it does the same crashing thing as when I don't hold it down, i.e. crashes when opening a page. I still wonder about that sound it makes like it is trying to open multiple things (several swishing sounds). It doesn't do that under my account.

Matt

Ok, if I were you I'd try either or both of the following.

1) Run Jaguar Cache Cleaner. It's resolved odd behaviour on my machine quite a few times.

2) Try logging in to your daughter's account after removing the preference folder from her library folder. DON'T DELETE IT as you'll probably wont to put it back after you see whether it makes a difference or not. I still suspect that this may be a rogue preference file problem.

djn1,

I tried removing the Safari preferences (com.apple.Safari.plist) from ~/Library/Preferences. Were you talking about removing this file or the whole Preferences folder? I did run the full set of Jaguar Cache Cleaner routines (light cleaning with all options, not the deep cleaning). Neither of these seemed to help.

mervTormel,

~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Safari.crash.log brings up two windows.

The first window is called "console.log" and says:

General observations:

It crashes when I (1) try to get it to load a web page, (2) click on "Reset Safari" under the Safari menu, or (3) click on the the "Security" icon in the Safari preferences.

I really appreciate you guys help with this. I felt pretty comfortable with OS 9 but am not there wit OS X. Thanks again,

I was suggesting the whole folder. Admittedly, this is entirely speculative, but it might be the case that the way that another app is configured is causing the problems with Safari. It probably wont make a difference, but it wouldn't hurt either. Move the entire folder, then login in (or relogin) to your daughter's account. If it makes no difference just put it back again overwriting any changes that have been made in the meanwhile.

As for JCC - I've run the deep cleaning option without any ill-effects. Was there a particular reason you didn't want to try it?

djn1,

I'll try the whole folder. I hadn't done the deep cleaning option of JCC because I thought that I had read it was kind of a last resort kind of thing. I'll give it a try and report back.

corrupted cookies ?

It appears from the error messages that you might have a corrupted cookies file. So (after quitting Safari) try moving (not deleting) that file ( /Users/annarieh/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/Cookies.plist ) and then run Safari again.

The only thing I've ever had to reset after doing a deep clean are the user pictures that appera on login - and then only because they're not part of the default set. In my experience the deep clean option is painless.

Well gentlemen,

The culprit was "/Users/annarieh/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/Cookies.plist". It is working like a champ now. Thank all of you for your help. My daughter will really be happy to have her Safari back. Thanks again!

tell Apple

You should tell Apple about this problem via the Safari Bug report button. Safari shouldn't crash because of a bad cookie.

Include the cookies files if that wouldn't be a security issue for you (Cookies often store passwords, etc). In any case, send them the error messages from Safari that appeared in your system.log.
