Safari AND Camino autofill implemented

I've written a very advanced smart JavaScript bookmarklet that can add an auto-fill feature to any browser at all, Safari, Camino, Mozilla, etc. You have to type in information for future form autofill once, and then the generator takes care of the rest. It will give you a link that you can drag to the bookmarks bar and rename. The next time you come to a form-intensive site (like http://registration.excite.com/excitereg/register.jsp , for a test to see if it worked) click on the bookmarklet you made, and enjoy having the forms filled out for you.

You can find the bookmarklet generator at my site (click here).

THIS IS PUBLIC-BETA 3 QUALITY! It won't wipe out your hard drive, but it's not perfect. If you find a page where it doesn't work, let me know and I'll try to fix it. Also, if it doesn't work at all for you, let me know.

Crashed Safari 0.8.2

Hi Gnome,

I do hope you get this working! I tried it with Safari 0.8.2 which I think is the last public release and each time (3) set up took me to the page with the Drag This Link to your Bookmarks Bar. Clicking and attempting to drag does nothing and when I let up on the mouse button Safari crashed each time. The third go around I didn't even fill out the form, just hit Set Up, clicked on the Drag This Link..., and crash. In case this makes a difference, in my Safari Preferences > Security > Web Content are all active, as is Ask before sending a non-secure form to a secure website.

I'll keep an eye on your progress as this is one feature I seriously wish to have for Safari!

Thanks for your effort.

Fixed! It now includes a different set of instructions for Safari users. Go ahead with the normal process, and read the note to Safari users.

OK, there's the note. To the test!

You might want to note it doesn't work on my own page yet-I gave everything a cryptic name for my own dev purposes. I'll fix that by the final.

I did notice that. It was the first page I tried and am glad you mentioned it. I've just tried it on several sites successfully and one which wouldn't respond. That one was Yahoo News sign up. I suspect though that it is a feature of that specific site as they have it arranged to not accept automated sign-ups.

While I'm here... Thanks for Snatcher. I use screen shots so often that it actually has a permanent spot on my Dock. It's that useful and so much more versatile than the built in Apple options.

Yep. I looked at the source and the textboxes are named things like:
.fn
.pc
.ln

...which I can't parse (yet). So yeah, their fault, but I can see if I can fix it.

Autofill will probably be in the next release of Safari... But this is a reasonable solution until 1.0 is released. Good one gnome!

Yeah, but for now (and maybe, in the case of Camino, forever) it works fine.

Final Version

The beta 3 seemed to work pretty well, but I've installed the "final" version in Safari, Camino, and Mozilla. Although Mozilla has its own autofill, this one works very nicely and I like having it right in the tool bar.

Thanks again. You should send this in as a "hint". It is too good a idea to get lost in the depths of the forums.

Maybe I will. Any other supporters for this to become a hint?

Absolutely this should be a hint...

as well as a possible pick-of-the-week. I have to fill out forms online several times each week at least and this saves me much repetitious, annoying typing. For example I had to set up a BidPay account today to send money to Canada... Click the form was almost all done. That was one of the best features of (dare I say it?) Internet Explorer for Mac.

Autofill

This is not only useful to Mac folks. It works on other platforms with almost any browser. I just installed in Mozilla on my Windows box.

In that case, should I still submit it?
