Anti-malware/virus software...

What's the consensus on the best/most effective antivirus/malware protection for OSX? I'm stuck with no tech support (cos I'm not on a Windows machine) and I just noticed that the default MacAfee Endpoint protection has expired...

Considering changing my profile name to Sitting Duck......

Appreciate any comments. I know it's subjective, but please do chime in...

Ta!

Try one of these free:

Sophos:

http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products...e-edition.aspx

or Clamxav:
http://www.clamxav.com/

I find they work well enough, and don't impact on the performance of the Macs.

No substitute for being suspicious though !

Regards,

Nick

Cheers, Macsolver - - Sophos looks like exactly what I need. And it's FREE!

This software category usually brings out strong opinions. Experienced, somewhat technical users don't need anything more than caution on OS X. The average user sometimes needs a safety net, and consultants, like myself, frequently use AV/anti-malware software for CYA purposes.

Symantec's NAV 12 created kernel panics on my machines and my clients' machines running Yosemite. It's an essentially dead product, but the replacement product hasn't been released yet. Symantec's web site is one of the worst I've ever been forced to use, and they've not been forthcoming about NAV 12 and Yosemite compatibility. I'd avoid Symantec. They are trending in the wrong direction (some would say they've always been the wrong choice).

In the paid category, Intego Internet Security X8 got a Editor's Choice award in a Macworld UK review of Mac AV/security software. I've used this in the past, and am currently testing it for client recommendations.
