Copyright Infringement Notice
I got one of these from my ISP but the IP address doesn't look right.
How do I definitively determine my IP address so as to confirm a match/non-match? I've checked the addresses on my Airport Utility, System Preferences (I'm running a Mac by the way) and even googled 'what's my IP address?' and do NOT see a match between my IP address and the one that's listed on the Copyright Infringement Notice. Thanks for any help in clarifying this for me. PS. No, I didn't download anything illegal. Just for the record. |

Do you allow any neighbors access to your wireless network?

Note that ISPs can change your IP address, so in theory it could have been changed from whatever time the infringement notice is talking about. You can also enter the IP listed in the notice into the Lookup tab of Network Utility. That may give you some idea of who owns it. |

There is also the very real possibility that the notice you received, ostensibly from your ISP, is actually phishing and is not from your ISP. Is the Copyright Infringement Notice asking you for any personal information?
You may want to call them on a telephone, at the number you independently verify is their correct number, and ask them if they really sent you that notice. Trevor

I gave my neighbor's daughter (our babysitter) access once. Theoretically, she could be doing something I don't know about but I doubt it. That said, I WILL change my network password. |

I ran the IP in the 'whois' of Network Utility and gave me 'No Match'. Is that weird? I did 'Lookup' too and gave me "…client.mchsi.com" which DOES look like my ISP's info. Last edited by zamboknee; 02-07-2013 at 05:31 AM. |

No, that's normal. Whois is for domain names rather than IP addresses.
So the notice from your ISP is not completely off base. How long ago did they say that this happened? |

It's not likely that your IP address changed since then. You might want to reply to them saying you don't think that any of your devices did the copyright infringement and that you noticed that you have a different IP address than the one in the email. You could ask them if they changed your IP address recently. They probably have logs that they can check.

Did the notice request a response?
The advice that I see usually suggests ignoring these.
