Restore iPhoto Library from Time Machine backup

I am trying to restore my wife's 8.77 gig iPhoto Library from a TM backup. The normal TM interface restore fails part way through (don't have the specific error message handy), so I created a new Library for her and tried to import photos from the Time Machine directory.

I can't select the iPhoto Library icon in the import dialog, as it's somewhat "grayed out", so to speak.

So I cd'ed into the specific directory and am copying the files using tar: tar -cf - iPhoto\ Library | (cd ~/Pictures; tar -xvf -).

Once the tar is done, what trick can I use to let iPhoto know that yes, this is in fact a Library and not just a directory named "iPhoto Library". The perms on my iPhoto Library are 777 plus an "@" (drwxrwxrwx@), and the directory created by tar is 755 (drwxr-xr-x). Viewing the Pictures directory in Finder shows that iPhoto Library 2 is there, but iPhoto Library is just another directory.

Does this make sense?
