Dollar & Sense software
Around late '80s there was a software for money managing called "Dollar & Sense". I think it was produced by a software company called Monogram (but I'm going by memory so don't take it for granted).
Does anybody remember it? I still have some files made with D&S but I don't have the software anymore and I'd like to, at least, print them. So, if anybody can help I appreciate. Armando |

Hi,
Monogram is the software company, and I still have the software for my Apple IIe. It has been nearly 25 years since it was started though! I could loan it out to you if you want to print your files! |

Dollars and Sense Software
I originally acquired (for free - it was bundled with other software) version 5.0 and have original disks and manual back in the early 90's and have been using ever since on my mac G3 with OS9.1 and even use on my dual boot G4 which has OS 9.1 installed in the classic mode. I still able to get checks from the original check supplier. The only glitch in the software has to do with the year 2K problems which causes no difficulty with normal use. Only issue is monthly reconciliation as manually inputting dates is a problem. The work around is to reset the computer's date (control panel) which allows the reset date to be automatically inserted into the blank date field. I love this software because of its ease of use and as I said have been using for my checking account since early 1990's. Another nice feature is ability to position your own check fields for proper printing. Of course it does not run on OSX as no such version is available (I wish it was as I dislike Quicken which I have tried). This software is very stable.

This software was originally bundled and free with other software. That is how i acquired it. One of best deals I ever made since I have been using since early 90's through OS 7, 8 and 9 and classic mode on OSX 10.4.11.

Unicorn68, sorry I'm so late in coming back to you. Is there any way you could upload "Dollar & Sense" in an FTP place so I can get it? If not, let me know and I'll provide you my public folder. Thank you Armando |

Dollar & Sense floppy
I also have files I need to reopen.
I have pulled out and restarted a Mac Mini that has a PowerPC G4 processor in it, and OS 10.3.9 as well as the classic environment running OS 9.2.2. I am hoping to get some of that old data from 1985 files. I rummaged around through old boxes and have found the Dollars and Sense installation disk, but have had no floppy drive for years. Do you have the program installed, and if so, and you are willing, is it transferable via dropbox? |

My I ask why on earth you need to get at the old file? What do you want to with the data. Your answer might inform a simpler path. There plenty of decent checkbook managing applications, most of which can read and write to formats from the more popular apps chiefly quicken. Their web site is still up and the program is still listed as OSX compatible.
You might try opening the documents in word or another text program, or excel. **** Word as a feature from the File Open menu, Under the File Format pop up, Recover text from any file. Last edited by anthlover; 01-02-2013 at 08:47 AM. |

Dollar & Sense floppy
Quicken for Macintosh is also going fast the way of dinosaurs, and the Intuit support staff in India were not helpful without paying for each tidbit of information for wading through the morass of Quicken problems. I don't know if they're still that way since I abandoned them for iBank some time ago, and managed to pull my whole history from Quirken forward into iBank.
Anyhow, I'm trying to go back to get a complete picture of my financial evolution from when I first started tracking my finances. That was back in 1985 using Dollars & Sense (which I paid for, including updates). After Dollars & Sense, I moved to MYM (which I have successfully collected data from), then to Quirken which I suffered through, and now iBank. Question is, is there a way to get an electronic copy of the software? If not, I'll buy a floppy drive on ebay and re-sell it after I use it. Thanks for your prompt reply. Paul |

I was not suggesting Quicken. Its format though is even used by Banks, many programs read and write to its format.
Did you the word feature i mentioned? It seems like the dollars and sense is still available presumably on Dvd or electronic download. That might be a better bet trying to reurrect A floppy install. None the less here are some for $20 from amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/s/ref=is...%3Delectronics Good Luck. Last edited by anthlover; 01-02-2013 at 12:26 PM. |

I understand that Quicken is supported by banks, but that doesn't make it good - just ubiquitous. Anyhow, we all have our own individual opinions.
I did find Dollars and Sense version 4.1c available for free download, but then realized just how far we have come since my first 128K Mac. That version of Dollars & Sense only works on Mac OS-1 thru OS-6, so my Mac Mini couldn't load it on OS-9.2 even if I bought a floppy drive (by the way, those are as low as $10.99 on ebay). I could stretch my effort and load the 68000 emulator, Mac vMini (neither Basilisk or SheepShaver would go back that far), but ..... even though an intriguing thought, not worth that much effort. If anyone needs that software, it is a free download in Macintosh Garden, since it falls in the category of "abandonware." The one place I saw it available for purchase, it was priced at $90.00 or above, but I don't believe it's the same program. Thanks for your discussion, anthlover.
