When discussing computer subjects, MAC = Media Access Control. MACs are very important for networking, every network interface has a MAC address. The computer type is a Mac; note that because it is not an acronym, the second and third letters are lower case. It's just short for Macintosh.
When you connect to this FTP site with your Mac, are you using the Finder? Or are you using an actual FTP client? I would recommend that you use an FTP client, the Finder does terribly when connecting to FTP. A good and free FTP client is Cyberduck: http://cyberduck.ch/ Trevor

Try turning on or off passive FTP. If you are behind a firewall you must use passive FTP.

I have a similar problem but the turning on and off the passive FTP doesn't work for me.

Are you using an FTP client, as I advised? Or are you attempting to do this with the Finder? The Finder is inadequate for FTP.
By the way, SirDice advise was to turn on OR off passive FTP, not to toggle it on then immediately off. In other words, if you have it on try turning it off, or if you have it off try turning it on. Don't just toggle it on then off and expect any change--that leaves it in the same state it was before, while you still had the problem. Trevor
