How to check if account is full admin?
Hi All
I have a bit of an issue here and need your help please. I am trying to install an application but it is telling me I need Admin Privileges to complete the install. Now, I have two accounts on my machine - both created on import from when I did a migration from my previous Macbook to my current MacbookPro. I am currently using OSX 10.7.4 I thought both these accounts had full admin access but either there's an issue with the application or I don't! So... how do I find out if the accounts I have are actually FULL ADMIN accounts on this machine. When I log in there are three accounts shown; My user account (with admin), the main Admin account (well, this is the one I thought was the main admin account) and a guess account. I can access each of them with the correct passwords. How do I check if they are the REAL admin accounts and if they are not, how do I create the real admin account please? Thanks all John

There is no "half-admin". Either an account is an admin, or it is not. There can be several admin accounts; none of them takes precedence over the other.
1. Can you use sudo in the Terminal? 2. Can you create new files outside your user account, such as in /Applications, /Library or /System? 3. You should also be able to see (and set) whether the account is admin in System Preferences > Users & Groups. If so, you are admin. Please describe in great detail what happened when you tried to install this app. What is the app? Are there any relevant messages in the Console utility at the time of installation? Thanks Ben
I can use SUDO and I also went through and tried the same installation after enabling the root account. Still got the same installation error message. I think I have validated now that this is an application issue and that I am logged in with admin access. I have disabled the root account now too. Thanks.

What application are you trying to install ?
Another way to find out info on accounts is to use Terminal. Code:
id shortusername |

Just to avoid confusion here -
Don't type "id shortusername", as that won't work (unless you actually have a user with the name "shortusername" I'm not sure that OS X will allow you to use that as a user name. Replace the word "shortusername" with your own short user name, or the short name for some other account on your Mac. |
